Activity 4 Focus exercise

Tell the students that having written some sentences they are now going to use them to build text.

Give each student a copy of Activity Sheet 34, 'Text building' and go through the points one by one. Ask the students to write their text on a separate sheet of paper and to ensure that they consider each of the points listed on the activity sheet.

When the students have finished the activity they should be encouraged to read their writing out to the rest of the group. (You might like to divide them into smaller groups or pairs for this exercise, depending on how students feel about talking in front of their classmates.) Listeners should check for general sense and meaning and should ask questions about what has been written. Stress how important it is for listeners to show they are paying attention by facial expression, eye contact, etc.
